Warsaw, 30 November 2014

STATEMENT

In connection to the events that took place on Thursday in the stands during the match of the European League Group L competition between Legia Warszawa and KSC Lokeren, as co owners of our Club we would like to declare that:

First and foremost, we firmly and categorically condemn any behaviours which are not in conformity with the fundamental values on which Legia Warszawa is founded – tolerance, respect and fair play. Our Club is a community of hundreds of thousands of devoted fans – we come from different backgrounds and have different views of the surrounding world. What unites us is almost one hundred years of Legia’s tradition based on the values that we cherish. There is no place for racism in this tradition. We would like to stress that the gates of the Łazienkowska Stadium shall be indefinitely closed to anyone who claims to be a Legia fan but does not understand or share this tradition.

Secondly – we would like to assure that we do not underestimate the meaning and the consequences of the incidents that took place in the stands of the Lokeren stadium. We are aware that racism is today one of the worst pathologies in European football and one that needs to be effectively and consistently countered. What matters in sports are skills, passion and willpower. Legia Warszawa does not tolerate any racist behaviour.

Such behaviour not only undermines the moral foundations of our Club but is also a real threat to Legia as we all bear the consequences of this behaviour. These consequences will strongly affect our budget, reputation and prestige. We cannot allow these situations to repeat in the future. Let us stress once again – Legia Warszawa has nothing to do with people who act to its detriment.

Thirdly, we promise that we will take appropriate measures against the individuals who were direct perpetrators of the acts we saw last Thursday. The Club is analysing the situation in detail and has submitted a request to KSC Lokeren to send the recording from the stadium monitoring system. We would like to underline that during this season we have already taken some stringent measures to punish the persons who behaved in an undignified manner in our Stadium stands. We are determined to follow this approach consistently. We count on all our supporters to cooperate with us.

Furthermore – we would like to express our full support for the policy of constructive dialogue between the groups of Legia Warszawa fans and the Management Board. We are convinced that it is the only good solution which has already brought some expected results. The matches organised at our Stadium are safe and spectacular shows also thanks to our fans. Together we can eliminate such incidents in every place where our team is playing. We believe that the community of our supporters shares our view and is ready to cooperate on this.

We would like to assure that we share and support the ideas that unite the European football family: RESPECT and SAY NO TO RACISM. We would like to apologise to the entire European sports community for the behaviour of all those who broke the fundamental rules of sports rivalry based on respect and fair play. We would like to especially apologise to KSC Lokeren goal keeper Boubacar Barry who was personally affected by this undignified behaviour. The true supporters of our Club judge a football player only by whether he puts his heart into the game and not by the colour of his skin.
