Former FC Basel president joins Legia as an advisor of the management board
Dr Bernhard Heusler, considered as an architect of one of the greatest success stories in European football in the last years, signed a long term co-operation agreement with Legia Warszawa. As an advisor of the management board he will be involved in club’s strategic projects on Polish and international level. He will also participate in meetings of Club’s supervisory board.
For over 14 years, Heusler played a leading role in FC Basel management, including serving as president between 2012 to 2017. During this time FC Basel dominated Swiss Super League and won 11 championship titles, including 8 in a row since 2010. In that time Swiss club has regularly qualified to group phase of European competitions including UEFA Champions’ League, where it twice reached the round of 16, as well as reached semifinals of UEFA Europa League in the 2012-13 season.
“Bernhard Heusler is one of the most prominent managers in European football. His successes show how important it is to have and to continuously implement a long-term strategy. Strategy which includes masterminding winning and dominating in domestic competitions, developing top training system of young players and transferring them to the leading European clubs. Numbers are always the best evidence. During Bernhard’s era FC Basel has among others increased transfer incomes from 3,6 mln PLN to 220 mln PLN. I am convinced his professional support will help Legia achieve our goals. Our strategy is very similar to the one which was implemented by FC Basel many years ago. We’ve got the same ambitions, because we want to become even more regular in winning Polish championships and advancing to the top 40 teams in Europe” said Dariusz Mioduski, the president and owner of Legia Warsaw.
FC Basel is well-known not only for domestic and international achievements, but also for one of the best Academies in Europe, which has brought over 40 players to the first team, including world class players like Granit Xhaka or Xerdan Shaqiri.
Heusler left the office in June 2017, only a few days after winning 20th championship title, which was secured six games before the end of the season. During the six years he was the president, FC Basel has advanced from 51st to 18th place in UEFA club ranking. In 2016 club’s incomes reached 132 mln CHF (about 480 mln PLN) and profits amounted to 29 mln CHF (about 105 mln PLN). Only in 2016 transfer incomes reached 61 mln CHF (about 220 mln PLN). The achievements of Bernhard Heusler were highly appreciated by FC Basel supporters. During the last game of his presidency he received a standing ovation in front of the full stadium. Heusler merits were rewarded on many levels - he was chosen honorary president of FC Basel and honorary member of Swiss Super League.
Bernhard Heusler gained additional strategic and executive experience in international football as FC Basel representative in European Club Association (2010 – 2017). He also served as a representative of Switzerland in UEFA Club Competition Committee, body in which currently seats Legia president Dariusz Mioduski.
Bernhard Heusler is also an co-owner of and partner at BHW - Heusler Werthmüller Heitz AG company, which provides consulting services in sports, business and culture projects. In his lawyer career (doctor juris degree) he was arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS/TAS) in Lausanne.
