80 years after the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, Legia and the Legia Foundation will honor the participants and the memory about those events. A commemorative spot will be presented today, and during the next match at the Legia stadium (Sunday, August 4th), there will be a solemn celebration of the 80th anniversary of the armed uprising against the Nazis under the slogan "Their world stopped for more than one minute." Charity auctions for the Insurgents will also begin that day at noon.
In the hearts of Polish people, the inhabitants of the capital city, and the club's fan community, the Warsaw Uprising remains a significant, meaningful event. It commemorates the dramatic fight for freedom of the entire nation, as well as the tragedy and unwavering faith in the humankind. Every year, the club and the Legia Foundation, which has regularly worked with the Association of Warsaw Insurgents for many years, recall and publicize the unparalleled heroism of the uprising and its victims.
To mark the anniversary, the club, together with the Legia Foundation, prepared commemorative graphics, a match poster, and a video spot, "Their world stopped for more than one minute," which draws attention to the fate of predominantly young people who were involved in the Uprising in August 1944.
On August 1, Legia players will play an away match against Welsh Caernarfon Town FC in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round, which will be preceded by a minute of silence at the club's request. The team's representatives participated and will participate in official state ceremonies on July 31 at the Warsaw Uprising Monument in Krasiński Square and on August 1 at the Gloria Victis Monument at the Powązki Military Cemetery. The Legia Foundation has already cleaned the graves of the Insurgents in one of the capital's largest necropolises.
A unique proposal to commemorate the heroes of the fight for Warsaw's freedom will be the opportunity to bid for patronage of the “capsules of memories" of 11 Insurgents who wrote them down at Legia Foundation's request. They were then transferred onto a special paper by a calligrapher. The unique and otherwise impossible to purchase memories and information about the patron will be deposited and displayed for 20 years at the Wiktor Boła Legia Warsaw Museum, in the form of a tied envelope with the Insurgent Anchor. Their official symbolic opening ceremony will take place on the 100th anniversary of the start of the Uprising in August 2044. All funds from the auctions will go towards the Association of Warsaw Insurgents to purchase necessities, primarily medicines, rehabilitation equipment, and food.
The main commemorations of the Uprising will take place on Sunday before and during the Legia Warsaw – Piast Gliwice game (20:15). Over a dozen participants of the Warsaw Uprising will be the honorary guests of the club and the Legia Foundation. Their representatives will address the assembled audience during the match studio and will be guests at the Legends Club.
Legia players' attire for this match will feature the names of 11 Insurgents who wrote down their memories. The jerseys, with commemorative certificates confirming their originality and noble purpose, will be auctioned off by the Legia Foundation for Insurgents. The club strongly encourages the fans to take part in the auctions, arrive early at the stadium on Sunday, take their seats in the stands at 20:00, and experience the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising and the match emotions together.
Numerous elements connected to the Uprising will also be visible in Legia Park, a publicly accessible green zone in front of the stadium's Eastern Stand. The Reconstruction Group's "Historical Project—Conspiracy" will introduce the gathered crowd to the mood of the 1940s and its wartime character. In the Family Sector of the stadium area, the central theme of all animations will be "A Lesson about Patriotism," and children's art workshops will include, among other things, creating white-and-red cotillions.
During the match, Legia Foundation volunteers will collect funds for the Insurgents in the Eastern and Southern Stands and in the Business Club, where, in addition to cash payments the possibility of financial support will be available via card terminal. The Association of Warsaw Insurgents, thanks to the initiative of the club and the Legia Foundation, will also receive 50 percent of the funds returned by season ticket holders who will not be able to attend the game and will give up their seats in accordance with the regulations.
For the next 63 days, the club will remind us of the Insurgents' heroic fight, their vast contribution to Polish identity, and the multigenerational joint sense of freedom. May this be a special time for all of us, connecting together the past and the present.
